Separating baby chicks based on sex is a time-consuming process due to the hands-on nature of the job. Thanks to new technology that takes advantage of natural light wavelengths, the process can be made simpler and more automated.

これまで、ひなの雄雌は羽の長さで鑑別されてきましたが、肉眼では見分けがつきにくいのが難点でした。そこで、ハイパースペクトルカメラを使って光の成分を分析し、特徴がわかりやすく表示できるようにしたものが「初生ひな雄雌鑑別」です。
まず、特徴点となる主翼羽と副翼羽、雛のボディ、脚や嘴などの3か所の波形を分析し、映像領域の技術で、補色関係である「緑」と「赤」に色の割り振りをおこないます。そして、特徴点の羽を赤く強調させ、AIに羽の長さを解析させ、雄雌の鑑別可能にしています。

雛の羽が赤く見えるのは、励起（れいき）現象を捉えたもので、物質がある波長の光を吸収した後、別の波長の光を放出(発光)しています。これまで鳥類での励起（れいき）現象が確認された報告は見つけられていませんでした。

現在は研究が進み、AIがより正確に判別できる映像の作成が可能となっています。
